Airports operate some of the most extensive CCTV networks of any civilian environment. Camera coverage extends across terminals, airside areas, perimeter fencing, car parks, ground transport zones and cargo facilities. The monitoring of those cameras is typically limited to specific high-priority zones, with the remainder relying on post-incident review.

Unattended baggage in terminal environments is the most operationally demanding detection challenge. At a large international airport during peak hours, the number of items temporarily left by passengers engaged in normal behaviour is high. Detection calibrated to dwell time, item type and surrounding passenger context, rather than simple presence, is what distinguishes actionable alerts from noise.

Perimeter security is a distinct and critical concern. Runway perimeter breaches, fence incursions and unauthorised access to airside areas represent a threat category that requires continuous monitoring across large, low-footprint boundary zones. After-hours detection in cargo and maintenance areas adds another monitoring requirement.

Restricted zone access monitoring is the third major challenge. Airside, secure areas and operational zones require access control that extends beyond badge readers. Detection that identifies individuals in zones inconsistent with their clearance, or that flags tailgating through airside doors, provides a layer that access logs alone cannot deliver.
