The camera density reflects the genuine security complexity of a high-footfall, open-access public transport environment. The operator capacity to monitor those cameras has not scaled proportionally.

Unattended items are the operational challenge that defines station security. At a busy interchange during peak hours, the number of items left temporarily by passengers during normal behaviour is high enough that standard detection thresholds either miss genuine anomalies or generate alert fatigue. Detection calibrated to dwell time, item characteristics and surrounding passenger behaviour changes the signal quality.

Platform safety is a separate and acute concern. Incidents near platform edges, passenger falls and individuals exhibiting distress behaviours in platform areas require rapid response. Detection that distinguishes between a passenger waiting normally and one exhibiting risk-associated behaviour gives operators the ability to direct response before an incident occurs.

Crowd flow monitoring across large concourses during disruption events is a genuine operational need. When platform changes affect large numbers of passengers simultaneously, crowd compression in bottleneck areas can develop quickly. Detection that tracks flow rate and density in real time gives control room operators the information to manage it.
