Warehouse theft falls into two categories: external intrusion and internal shrinkage. External intrusion is typically an after-hours problem: perimeter breaches, lorry park entries, loading bay access. Internal shrinkage is more complex. It involves the same staff and contractors who are authorised to be in the building, operating in the gaps between camera coverage and shift management attention.

Large distribution centres operate across hundreds of thousands of square feet. Camera coverage is extensive but operator monitoring is limited. The areas where theft concentrates, picking aisles, lorry loading bays, high-value goods zones, are the areas least likely to have a supervisor present and most likely to have intermittent camera attention.

Lone worker safety is a significant and often underweighted risk. Forklift incidents, falls from mezzanine levels, medical episodes in cold store areas and entrapment in compactors are all scenarios where detection time determines outcome. A person stationary in an unusual location, or a person down in a risk zone, requires a response that passive CCTV recording cannot trigger.

Access control anomalies, staff using valid credentials in locations or at times that do not match their role, are a documented precursor to both internal theft and data security incidents. Detection that cross-references access patterns with physical location provides an early warning that audit logs alone cannot deliver.
