Live events concentrate large numbers of people in bounded spaces over a compressed timeframe. Entry and exit pressure, crowd dynamics during headline acts, alcohol service in standing areas and the temporary nature of event infrastructure all create safety conditions that differ materially from permanent venues. The risk is not hypothetical: crowd crush events have occurred at festivals, concerts and sporting events where camera coverage existed but monitoring was insufficient.

Crowd density monitoring at events is not simply a question of counting people. It is about detecting the early indicators of crowd compression: the reduction in movement rate, the change in crowd flow direction, the build-up of density in areas near barriers, access points and stage fronts. These patterns have predictable timelines from onset to dangerous compression. Detection that identifies them early gives your safety team time to intervene.

Aggression at events follows a similar pattern. Pre-conflict behaviour, escalating vocal exchanges, posture changes and the involvement of bystanders, is observable in the minutes before a physical incident occurs. Entry point monitoring during ingress is a separate concern: ticket fraud, queue-jumping and the introduction of prohibited items are detectable through behaviour patterns that standard gate-checking cannot identify.

Martyn's Law applies to all events with 200 or more capacity. Standard tier events must have basic procedures in place. Enhanced tier events (800+) must document proportionate security measures. For festival organisers and arena event teams, this is not a future obligation. It is a current planning requirement.
